THE CHALLENGE:
This school project tasked us to design a logo for a city of our choice, embodying its spirit, arts, culture, history and present. I chose Ubud, the cultural capital of Bali. Ubud is known for its spirituality, with several beautiful hindu temples throughout the town.
THE SOLUTION:
To honor the spiritual history and artistic culture, I chose the Barong lion for the logo icon. The Barong lion is a mythical creature, often found in and around Hindu temples to guard against evil spirits, and is considered the protector of the island. To make the logo specific to Ubud, I shaped the crown to match the silhouette of the gates of Gunung Lebah—one of Ubud’s most famous Hindu temples. In addition, I included “UBUD” in the Barong’s smile as a slightly hidden touch. The color palette reflects the traditional colors used in Barong Lion masks as well as paintings including the lion.

I researched Ubud’s background and watched travel YouTube videos to inspire me and help me come up with the best symbolism. Ubud is known for its beautiful nature, craftsmanship, and ties to its spiritual history. Icons I considered included the Barong lion, silhouettes of temples, floral designs found in textile patterns, banyan tree, and more.
