THE EVOLUTION

OF A FROG

Client: College
Project Type: ~30 second animated video with audio

THE CHALLENGE:

In this project, we were tasked to create a 30 second animated video with audio. The concept and aesthetic choices were left entirely up to us.

THE SOLUTION:

I decided to attempt a traditional Japanese sumi-ink painting style for the aesthetic, because I’ve never seen an animated video in this style. Frogs are one of my favorite animals, so I decided to make the video about frogs and their interesting development process. I drew-out each frame, and kept the transitions slightly choppy and imperfect for the sake of it looking vintage. I chose audio that sounded like old flute music—music that could perhaps be used in a historical Japanese film. I combined that audio with splashing noises, birds singing, and other sounds that could be found in nature.

ILLIKOI GOODS

Client: Illikoi Goods
Project Type: Logo animation for business

This short animation was made for the owner of Illikoi Goods, a talented seamster known for his stylish, hand-made hats. I incorporated a logo he already had in this animation.

While I was gathering inspiration, I noticed that plastic bobbins (thread holders) were shaped kind of like a capital, serif “I.” I thought it would be a clever idea to replace the “I” in his logo with the bobbin, and have the thread spell out the rest of the name. To conclude the animation, I made the needle underline the graphic.
